Chapter Eleven

I pulled up in front of my apartment building, climbed from my truck, and pocketed the keys after ensuring it was locked up tight.

Making the decision to take the stairs instead of the elevator, I pushed through the door marked ‘stairwell.’ Our apartment, or rather my apartment was on the fourth floor, and taking the steps two at a time, I soon found myself unlocking the door.

Lara was inside, pacing the floor. It was obvious something was desperately wrong, so doing what was expected, I crossed the floor and gathered her into my arms.

“Oh, Ty. I am in such a mess and I don’t know where to turn. I need your help.”

“Come and sit down, babe. I’m sure things aren’t as bad as they seem.”

“They’re much, much worse, Ty.”

We sat on the couch, turning sideways to face each other and I took hold of her hands. Excitement bubbled within. Was this it, had the time come that she would confide in me about her treason?

“Tell me what’s going on that has you so upset.”

“Please don’t hate me. I had no choice. They were threatening me.”

I bet they were, bitch.

I waited a moment and she finally spoke. After telling me about Senator Kiles and his son, her reasons for becoming entangled, she explained what had her so upset.

“Vice Marshall Romani Petrovitch has taken a leave of absence and I’m unable to gain access to the information I need. Banital are demanding details of the latest troop movements and I managed to delay them by saying the person I obtained it from was away for a day or two. They gave me forty-eight hours and said if I don’t get them the information, they’ll go to the President.” Her eyes filled with tears, but I knew the reason for them was because she’d been backed into a corner and was scared of being found out. “I need your help, Ty. I’ll go to prison. I can’t spend the rest of my life in there. Please, I’m desperate.”

I could see the possibility of prison for the rest of her life terrified Lara. I no longer wanted to kill her slowly. Instead, I wanted her locked away, to suffer for the rest of her life. It would be a much more fitting punishment for the woman who had cost so many lives.

“What do you want me to do to help?”

She visibly relaxed, probably relieved that I hadn’t immediately said I would go to the authorities.

“You’re not angry?”

“No, I understand how you must have gotten caught up in Banital’s trap. But what can I do?”

“You have friends in the army, could one of them help with giving you the troop movements in Ailinia?”

“That would mean playing an active part in getting military friends killed.” I had to make her think I was reluctant so she wouldn’t become suspicious.

“Please, Ty, do this for the woman you love.”

Love, you? Not in a million years. There would be no one else for me after Claire. I’d been with the best woman on earth.
